The Sacred Origin

Vedaranyam was once known as Thirumaraikadu, meaning “The Forest of the Vedas.” According to temple legend, the four Vedas themselves worshipped Lord Shiva at this sacred site. After completing their divine worship, the Vedas miraculously closed the main temple doors.

From that moment, the doors could not be opened by human effort. Devotees were forced to worship the Lord from outside, as the entrance remained sealed by divine will.

The Arrival of the Great Saints

In the 7th century, two of the most revered Saivite saints visited Vedaranyam:

• Tirunavukkarasar (Appar)
• Tirugnana Sambandar

Moved by deep devotion, Appar sang Thevaram hymns praising Lord Shiva and humbly requested the doors to open.

The Miracle

As the hymn echoed through the sacred air, the massive temple doors opened miraculously.

Later, Tirugnana Sambandar sang another hymn, and by divine grace, the doors closed once again.
